Initially it was thought the remains might belong to Indian crew member Russel Rebello. But if they belong to a woman, they may the remains of Italian passenger Maria Grazia Tricarichi. The disaster in January 2012 claimed 32 lives, but the bodies of Rebello and Tricarichi were not found in the aftermath along with those of the 30 other victims.
The sources said the remains, which were in an advanced state of decomposition due to the length of time they had been in water, were initially thought to belong to a man because it looked like they were with male jogging shoes.
But these may actually have been mistaken for parts of a bra and tights.
