Officer shot in front of premier’s office discharged soon
(ANSA) – Florence, November 8 – The police officer who was shot in front of the premier’s office in Rome this spring is expected to leave hospital before Christmas, his family revealed Friday. Giuseppe Giangrande, 51, was shot in the spine when an unemployed man attacked the nearby presidential palace just as Italy’s new government was being sworn in on April 28.
A colleague was also shot, but Giangrande suffered the most serious injuries of the pair after the man fired six rounds before he was apprehended.
A woman passerby was also slightly injured when she was grazed by a bullet.
Giangrande remains paralyzed in most of his body, but his daughter told Italian daily La Nazione that he plans to go back to work on the police force. Further operations are in store that could restore more mobility, she added.
